Maddies Life Story
|
|||||
Maddie is a 5 year old purebred American Pit bull Terrier who is fortunate enough to have found Save A Dog Today.
Maddie lived on a 5 foot chain for 4 out of 5 years, she was chained 24/7 is the blistering heat and drenching rain. She had a small home made dog house that faced the weather and provided little protection in the pouring Redding rain. She lived a life of muddy paws and a cold wet coat. In the summer, it wasn't any better. The blistering heat was unbearable, but what was worse is no toys, no playing, and no love.
When the previous owners bought Maddie and brought her home they where to impatient to teach her and train her to become a part of their family. Maddie was sentenced to a life of loneliness and suffering for no reason other than she was purchased by people that didn't care.
Maddie did not like it and was very bored so kept attempting to escape her misery by pushing through the very brittle old wood fence. All Maddie wanted was some attention, instead of being left out in the yard without toys or love, or even a warm bed in the winter.
To keep her self sane she learned how to play with her food bowl and burying what little tidbits she got.
Unfortunately, to keep her alive during the hot Redding days, the owners bought a very shallow kids turtle sandbox filled it with an inch of water so Maddie would not get a heatstroke, it saved her life but drew in the mosquitoes by the millions. Maddie was not protected with monthly heartworm prevention and ended up with an advanced case of Heartworms.
However, one day Maddies life turned around. Another rescue e-mailed Save A Dog Today with the urgency of Maddie's situation. Since it was on my way to town I thought I would stop by and meet Maddie and take a few pictures (see the ones of her on chain in the mud).
When I met Maddie she looked at me with those big eyes and barked to say Hello and Save me, please get me out of here. I couldn't resist. I promised her I would be back. In the meantime, I gave her chicken treats and left a big rawhide behind. Luckily, I found a foster home for Maddie! I was able to end her misery.
When Maddie arrived at her temporary foster home, she got to run for the first time in ages on a fenced acre with a pond, she went swimming which she loves to do and could not believe her eyes that she was now in a nice place and free of the chain
We took her to our Vet and began the treatment for her heartworms. This was very painful for her, so she has learned not to like Vets. Maddie is now free of heartworms and has a clean bill of health. However, she is still a little leery of the Vet.
Maddie started obedience training and rehabilitation in her new foster home. She knows her basic commands, which include sit down wait leave-it and a few others, which she is still working on mastering. Maddie enjoys swimming and now loves playing with toys. Maddie especially loves hiking. She is an excellent hiker, carrying her backpack with her treats and water. She poops on command and buries it when she is done. She is a great companion!
Maddie has now learned to love being pampered. She has a coat in the winter time which she loves to wear. She loves to put on her rain coat and go for a hike in the beautiful green foliage with the gentle coolness of the rain.
Maddie LOVES car rides too.
Maddie is looking for her forever home, someone who will give Maddie the love she deserves and needs. She needs that special someone that will accept her as she is and is willing to keep working with her and be a good strong but gentle loving leader
Maddie has been fine with all people she has met (except the Vet). However, she has never been around young kids, so it is best that she be in an adult home.
Maddie has tolerated some dogs at a distance, but prefers to be an only dog. She hasn't been around cats before, so best without.
